About the Sinkhole

A unique piece of geology and history, in the middle of a sheep farm

The Kilsby Sinkhole experience represents the fruits of five generations of the Kilsby family. This 15-minute features interviews of Ross and Graham Kilsby, conducted by Dr Richard Harris, whose team produced the video.
On a sheep farm located amidst beautiful rolling countryside just 14km south of Mount Gambier, you can find a unique geological feature and a wealth of experiences.
Once little more than a watering hole on the stock route through the Mount Schank area, Kilsby Sinkhole has been at the heart of four generations of farming activity by the Kilsby family. In that time, use of the sinkhole has changed and grown, and today it is offers a fascinating history and a host of adventures

SCUBA Diving & Freediving

SCUBA

For a long time, SCUBA diving in Kilsby Sinkhole was only available to highly trained cave divers.

Today, however, all certified and current divers (Open Water or equivalent and above) can dive in the “lake” portion of the sinkhole and experience the crystal-clear waters and amazing beams of light that have made Kilsby Sinkhole a world-famous dive site.

Arrange a dive with one of our own experienced dive guides, or book onto a trip with one of our approved operators and enjoy this “bucket-list” dive. Check out our Licensees and local operator Dive Experience who can help you out.

Freediving

Freediving at the site has become very popular, Kilsby Sinkhole has been labelled as “the best Freediving site in Australia”.

Freedive in the crystal clear waters for a depth of 27 meters and visability most days of 50 meters.

This can only be experienced under the supervision and instruction of one of our Freediving Licensees.

We have a number of qualified Freediving instructors that visit the site regularly, you will need to contact them direct for any Freediving bookings.

Please be aware that we do not allow Freediving to occur during our snorkel sessions.

Gin Tasting

Inspired by the “gin-clear” water of Kilsby Sinkhole and the abundance of first-rate local ingredients, the Kilsby family and a few friends were inspired to create Sinkhole Gin. Crafted in small batches using water from the aquifer which feeds the sinkhole and botanicals sourced around the region, Sinkhole is a refreshing, modern Australian gin. Where better to taste it than in the place which inspired it?
